Heart to Heart International is a global volunteer movement. Its core purpose is to transform lives through service—one volunteer and one community at a time. All activities are geared to improve health in underserved communities. We fulfill our mission by connecting people and resources to a world in need.
Though our name is derived from our inaugural project—a private airlift from Kansas City (the heart of America) to Moscow (the heart of Russia)—we have always served as a humanitarian connection. Whether it’s a volunteer, donor or partner, we optimize each resource to address health concerns across America and around the world.
Heart to Heart International was founded on January 31, 1992. In just a few short years, we have transitioned from being a grassroots network of volunteers in the Midwest to a world-class humanitarian organization that has a seat at the table on critical discussions related to global relief and development.
Heart to Heart International operates health-focused programs both locally and globally. Each program fits into one of these areas of strategic focus—improving health, responding to people in crisis, distributing medical aid and addressing the issues affecting community health.
Our programs address health capacity and access issues around the world. Our relief efforts focus primarily on providing a quality medical response to save lives and restore communities to health.
Heart to Heart International has humanitarian operations in every major region of the world. We support ongoing health initiatives in nearly 60 countries, including the United States. Most of Heart to Heart’s work is located in the least-developed countries or underserved regions, where the patient-to-provider ratio is disproportionately high.
Heart to Heart International is very active across the United States, working alongside free health clinics and other safety-net agencies to increase community access to essential health services in urban and rural settings from coast to coast.
In times of disaster, Heart to Heart is ready to respond when community needs exceed the local capacity to address the needs. We fill the gap in medical care until the local health system has the capacity to resume patient care within its community.
Heart to Heart International only goes where it is needed or where its scope of services is a good fit. We typically work in underserved regions where the patient-to-provider ratio is disproportionately high or in communities where local needs exceed the ability to address those needs.
At any given time, Heart to Heart International is monitoring many different crises around the world. We are part of the international response community, so we are tuned in to local needs.

Our response is often predicated by an international or federal call for our assistance. When we receive the call, we mobilize quickly for action.
Heart to Heart International receives support from a diverse donor base that includes major companies, local businesses, foundations, civic organizations, schools, universities, faith communities, and individuals.
We use a multi-channel approach to raise financial support for our humanitarian operations, including corporate relations, direct marketing, online giving, grant writing, special events, community events, tradeshows, speaking engagements and media relations.
Much of our support comes in the form of gift-in-kind donations of pharmaceuticals and medical supplies. We also solicit donations of professional services from select industries.
Historically, more than 98 percent of all contributions goes directly to Heart to Heart's humanitarian programs. Additionally, procurement efforts enable us to distribute an average of $25 in aid for every $1 we receive in support.
Through our programs we literally change millions of lives each year by providing life-saving medications, sharing new insights that affect the medical treatment of people around the world, reaching out to the underserved and giving thousands of people the opportunity to be involved in something bigger than themselves—changing their world in the process.

Heart to Heart organizes special events to bring our community of supporters together in one place. These events are designed as times of inspiration and investment. One of our marquee events is the “Celebration of the Heart”—an annual gala each fall in Kansas City. This event attracts top talent and guests from around the country for an inspirational evening that recognizes how supporters make a difference through the humanitarian work of Heart to Heart International.
We also organize special Golf Tournaments, as well as a monthly behind-the-scenes tour of our global operations called “The Backstage Pass”.

Heart to Heart encourages partners, volunteers and donors to get involved in our humanitarian movement and learn more about issues affecting global health. Several donors help us expand our community of supporters through Affinity Events. At these events, our donors endorse our global work and encourage their business or social networks to join in supporting Heart to Heart.
Some retailers and corporate donors also promote their support of Heart to Heart through Cause Marketing partnerships. Whether it is a percentage of sales or a special product, customers become more aware of us and gain a new appreciation of our partners.

We also encourage you to collect and/or pack specialized items that we can deliver in the U.S. and around the world. You can assemble these items yourself or make it a family affair. You can even get your workplace, school, university, civic club or faith community involved in the project. One such project takes place every summer. Hundreds of volunteers throughout the Midwest help us assemble Heart to Heart SchoolPacks—backpacks full of essential, age-appropriate school supplies. The SchoolPacks are then distributed to disadvantaged children and youth.

Haiti has become a second home for Heart to Heart International. When the earthquake hit, our organization was already prepared to respond in Haiti, and we had people on the ground just hours following the devastation.
Currently, we have taken up permanent residence in Haiti, with 3 full-time coordinators living and working closely with local officials for a long-term response and rebuilding of the healthcare system in Haiti. We currently provide 5 medical clinics and a constant flow of medical supplies and volunteer nurses and doctors to administer quality healthcare, daily.
