Every year, 56 million kids in the United States head back to school. Psychologists say that the first weeks of a new school year are extremely important to the development of self-esteem and academic success in students. Imagine the plight of millions of disadvantaged children and youth who start school without even a pencil or paper to complete one of their first assignments: What did you do last summer?

These kids do not need to be statistics. They are smart students. They want to succeed in school, but they simply lack the resources to do so.
