Heart to Heart remembers Hurricane Katrina,
prepares for Gustav’s arrival

OLATHE, Kan./August 28, 2008 — Heart to Heart International Inc., a leading global humanitarian organization, today honored those affected by Hurricane Katrina with three minutes of silence—one minute for every year since the storm struck the Gulf Coast.

Like the quiet before a storm, Heart to Heart’s staff took a moment to remember the thousands of people who were killed, injured or displaced by the hurricane. Then the staff prepared for a possible response ahead of Hurricane Gustav, which intensified into a Category-4 storm this morning and is targeting the coastline of Louisiana, including several parishes in the New Orleans area.

“Though we commemorate a sad anniversary, we are honored to have served alongside so many brave men and women who volunteered with us to provide medical care to people in crisis weeks and months after Hurricane Katrina hit the region,” said Jon D. North, Heart to Heart’s CEO. “Their courage and the courage of communities to rise from ruin inspire us to continue finding ways to rebuild lives along the Gulf Coast.”

Heart to Heart has served the region since September 2005 and recently provided 30 Automatic External Defibrillators to institutions and agencies throughout New Orleans.

“We have developed strong ties to agencies working in New Orleans,” said Dr. Jeff DeGraffenreid, Heart to Heart’s chief operating officer. “If Gustav hits this region, we’ll be ready to respond.”

Heart to Heart is preparing for possible aid shipments and alerting its volunteer base ahead of the storm’s arrival.
