For more than 10 years, Heart to Heart operated year-round programs that promoted health in rural China. Most of our work centered in Sichuan Province, which is home to 90 million people and one of the fastest growing regions on the mainland. Our work started with a medical airlift to the Sichuan capital of Chengdu and quickly transitioned into ongoing health initiatives throughout southwestern China that resulted in lower infant mortality rates, restored vision, and improved response times to complex emergencies. We also addressed sanitation issues and made environmental improvements at several agencies serving vulnerable populations in Sichuan.
Heart to Heart is currently evaluating next steps in Sichuan and continues to explore new opportunities to promote health in China.
Heart to Heart is working closely with emergency responders to help stabilize the healthcare infrastructure in Sichuan Province following a massive earthquake that struck the region on May 12, 2008. Our initial efforts focused on saving lives near the epicenter. Now we are working to expand recovery efforts at clinics in outlying areas.
