Heart to Heart International (HHI) was well represented in the 2019 Lawrence St. Patrick’s Day Parade on a gorgeous Sunday afternoon. Joining 90 other parade entries, volunteer Phil Meier drove the HHI Mobile Medical Unit from Lenexa to participate in the 2.5 mile parade through downtown Lawrence.
Joining Phil were regular volunteers Donna Lamano , Michael Van Horn, and Ben Gleeson. Also joining the team were volunteers-for-a-day Kate Gleeson, Louise Gleeson (5 months old and her first parade), Max Shipley (age 5), Zach Shipley (age 3), and special guest, Glenn “Woody” Woodmancy – also his first parade. Woody is a 96-year-old WWII veteran living in Olathe, Kansas, who served in the Army Air Corps as a B-24 pilot in the South Pacific conducting photo reconnaissance missions.
As the MMU passed the grandstand, Woody was recognized for his service to our country. The announcer also recognized HHI’s contributions around the world serving the medical needs of underserved communities and responding to disasters domestically and internationally.
The parade was a ton of fun and a great opportunity to introduce HHI and the Mobile Medical Unit to a new audience. Next time we’ll bring more volunteers and more candy. A lot more candy.
