Meet the Staff
Chief Executive Officer
Kim Carroll joined Heart to Heart International in 2016, bringing to the organization extensive leadership experience from a successful career in the pharmaceutical industry. She began her career with Marion Laboratories in Kansas City, and her experience includes general management and commercial leadership roles at Aventis, The Medicines Company, EUSA Pharma and Jazz Pharmaceuticals. Kim is a graduate of Mercer University and holds an MBA from Troy State University
Like many on our team, Kim started at Heart to Heart International as a volunteer.
EVP – Strategic Development
Jim Mitchum brings considerable experience in senior strategic development to Heart to Heart International. Jim has worked for Eli Lilly & Co, spent 20 years with Marion Laboratories and held international executive positions with Hoechst Marion Roussel in Germany, Aventis UK, Aventis Japan, and Sanofi-Aventis. He also holds an MBA from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville’s College of Business Administration and also has a background in service-oriented work having spent some of his youth living in Ethiopia. Though Jim has lived and worked in the U.S. and the world, he and his wife consider Kansas City to be home, having raised their family and established roots in the KC Metro.
Chief Medical Officer
Rick is a family physician based in Lenexa, Kansas. He is a graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point and retired as a U.S. Army Colonel served two tours in Iraq. For the past two decades, he has provided primary care, public health and disaster response in the U.S., the Caribbean, sub-Saharan Africa and the Philippines. Rick holds a graduate certificate in Public Health in the Developing World. Rick also severed as the Chief Medical Officer for HHI’s Ebola Treatment Unit in Liberia.
Vice President of Operations
Dan grew up in the highlands of Papua New Guinea where his passion for helping people in resource-poor environments was born. Dan joined HHI in 1999. He holds a Bachelor’s in International Agricultural Development from MidAmerica Nazarene University and a Master’s in International Studies from the University of Kansas. He also has a passion for BBQ. He cooks BBQ competitively, judges BBQ competitions and teaches BBQ classes.
Country Director, Haiti
Christophe joined HHI after 18 years with the Association of Peasants of Fondwa, an indigenous non-profit working in rural development through social and economic activities, with an emphasis on environmental protection. Christophe’s job with HHI began by modeling our development plan for Haiti: “Federation of Sectors”. In six years, he has helped to develop 22 federations. Christophe received his Master’s in Local Development from a graduate program at the Catholic University of Lyon, France. His happiness and joy is to work with the most vulnerable people in order to help them to improve communities.
Executive Director, Rural Health Program
An experienced leader in the public health arena, Janice was integral to the development of HHI’s community health worker training program in Haiti. Prior to recently joining the HHI staff, she was the Director for Healthy Shelby, a public health initiative in Shelby County, Tennessee. She holds an MPH from the University of Memphis and is a native of Guyana, South America. She enjoys the outdoors, traveling and engaging with people and cultures. She and her husband Monroe live in Memphis.
Director of Laboratory
Carla is a Clinical Laboratory Scientist certified by the American Society for Clinical Pathology. She started with HHI as a volunteer and now oversees a number of our programs: raising clinical laboratories up to World Health Organization standards in Haiti and Papua New Guinea; coordinating emergency and trauma training in Chengdu, China; and engaging expert volunteers to serve in safety-net clinic laboratories in the US. Carla also helps out when HHI responds to disasters. She’s quite busy! Carla is a skilled photographer, and she enjoys being on the move, exploring new countries and meeting new people.
Director of Corporate Relations
Steve was a long-time volunteer for HHI prior to joining the staff in 2002. He’s a graduate of Kansas State University and worked in retail management before coming on board to serve in numerous roles at Heart to Heart, most recently as the point person working with corporate donors. Steve is also HHI’s liaison to The Partnership for Quality Medical Donations (PQMD) where he serves as Chair of the Program Services Committee and on the Executive Board. His wife of 33 years, Liane, remains a devoted volunteer for HHI.
Vice President – PowrServ
Brian Sink serves Heart to Heart International as Vice President, PowrServ where he oversees sales, business development and operations functions. Brian held positions as an independent consultant in both process improvement and product management following a 24-year career with Sprint Communications where he oversaw product management teams in both their retail and wholesale divisions.
Sarah joined HHI in 2016 and brings a wide range of administrative and human resource experience in the pharmaceutical, insurance, and publishing industries. She provides support to the CEO and COO, as well as the HHI Board of Directors. Her responsibilities also include Human Resources and the coordination of special events and projects. Sarah enjoys the opportunity to contribute to the worthwhile mission of Heart to Heart International.
Haiti Medical Director
Dr. Jackenson Davilmar has worked for Heart to Heart International since 2011 as a General Practitioner and recently was promoted to medical director in Haiti. Jackenson attended the University of the State of Haiti where he earned a License in General Medicine. Prior to joining HHI he worked with Doctors Without Borders and Saint Luke Foundation in Cholera response and with Partners in Health in the Emergency Department of their Hospital in Mirebalais.
Director, Disaster Response
Heather graduated from Seattle University and commissioned as an officer in the US Army. She served for ten years as a Blackhawk pilot with overseas assignments in Iraq and Korea. She started as a volunteer with Heart to Heart and then worked in both Houston and Puerto Rico as the disaster response team lead. In her spare time she enjoys traveling, photography, and cooking.
Director of Community Health, Haiti
Manager – Operations Hub
Rick started with HHI as a volunteer in December of 2005. Two years later he joined the staff after 21 years in the corporate world of accounting. Rick oversees warehouse operations at The Hub – shipments large and small. He says he’s fulfilled knowing he’s helping people around the US and the world. Outside of HHI, Rick is very involved in his church and loves the feel of the open road astride his Yamaha Venture.
Program Director, Haiti
Born into a family of five siblings, Josué soon developed a passion for music, arts and community service. He has studied management and holds advanced degrees in finance, management and auditing. Josué has worked for 13 years supporting the development of communities and capacity building of grassroots organizations throughout the country of Haiti. Beyond serving as program director in Haiti, Josué is the National Coordinator of the Kore Fanmi Program implemented with UNICEF in the Southeast Region of Haiti.
Director, PowrServ Event Management & Haiti Operations
Theresa says that she could be considered miserly, which is actually an admirable trait when you’re responsible for ‘cash out’. She also has quite the friendly and charitable side as she once raised a puppy to be a canine companion for those with physical disabilities. She served as a United Way Ambassador for three years while working at Sprint and set up financial processes and procedures for a company serving the autistic community.
HR/Finance Manager, Haiti
Piterson joined HHI in January 2013 and holds a degree in accounting from Université G.O.C. in Port-au-Prince and is currently completing a master degree in human resources. Hailing from Jérémie, Haiti, Piterson says that working at HHI is like working within a loving family. He feels that his current role gives him a major opportunity to help his wonderful country which he deeply loves.
Training Officer, Haiti
Originally from Leogane, Haiti, Talix has years of experience in the field of management and monitoring of development projects in West Africa, in the Great Lake Africa region and in the Caribbean. Talix holds a Master’s Degree in Administration of Social Action from the University of Abomey-Calami in Benin, and a professional master in international cooperation and humanitarian aid from the Kalu Institute based in Spain.
Julie joined Heart to Heart in February 2018 with diverse international experience directing the development and sustainability of medical and psychosocial programming for children living with HIV in five African countries. She is most interested in the establishment of sustainable health systems that combat health disparities for vulnerable populations and is particularly passionate about the treatment, care and prevention of HIV and tuberculosis in developing settings. In her spare time, Julie can be found squeezing the cheeks of her baby niece or informing the general public of Paul Simon’s 2018 farewell tour…which is happening now…in a major or not so major city near you.
Jillian joined HHI in September 2015 after spending four years working in the mental health field for non-profits in Minnesota and Kansas. Jillian spent much of her youth traveling which served as an inspiration to seek a degree in Global Studies and Human Rights, which she earned from the University of Minnesota. Born and raised in Wisconsin, her love for snow-filled winters and Wisconsin sports – Go Badgers! – remains strong after she moved to Kansas City.
JUDY HASTERT, MT (ASCP)
Manager, Laboratory Programs
Judy is a Clinical Laboratory Scientist who spent many years in the clinical laboratory, focusing primarily on microbiology and laboratory quality. She began volunteering with Heart to Heart in 2008 as a parasitologist on a trip to Guatemala and continued to volunteer with HHI until joining the organization full-time in 2015. She now combines these passions in her role as Manager of Laboratory Programs. One of the highlights of Judy’s year is the annual Summer Solstice party that she and her husband Mark host, featuring live music (depending on the year it could be bluegrass or an 18-piece big band)!
Manager of Product Distribution
Joel joined HHI in February 2018 after spending 11 years in regulatory compliance with the State of Colorado. As the manager of product distribution, Joel collaborates with donors and vendors to coordinate incoming gifts in kind and purchases.
Additionally, Joel works closely with partner organizations to facilitate outbound distribution of products. Joel is married with two children and is currently pursuing a Master of Divinity.
Manager, Volunteer Engagement
With over 10 years of experience mobilizing and equipping both staff and volunteers for service trips across the country, Nachelle joined HHI in October 2018. She recently moved back to the Kansas City area after 12 years in Minnesota. In spite of far too many sub-zero days, she has developed an appreciation for all things winter. Nachelle is excited to be warmer, a bit closer to the St. Louis Cardinals and to find new places to go kayaking.
Courtney joined HHI after serving with AmeriCorps NCCC – FEMA Corps in both Texas and Puerto Rico during hurricane response and recovery. She is excited to use her experience volunteering to support the HHI volunteers as they serve all over the world. Courtney was born and raised in Omaha, NE but fell in love with Kansas City while earning her Bachelor’s in Emergency and Disaster Management at Northwest Missouri State University. In her free time, Courtney likes to attend sporting events, explore the outdoors, and go home to visit family!
Having a passion for community development and philanthropy, Elizabeth recently joined the HHI team, where she will be working closely with distribution partners. She holds a Graduate Certificate of Nonprofit Management from the University of Missouri-Kansas City and is currently working on a Master of Public Administration. She loves going on walks with her dog, attending local art events, traveling, and learning about other cultures.
Shipping Coordinator – Operations Hub
Visit The Hub and you’ll likely see Glenn on a forklift moving pallets of aid supplies to and fro. He can turn a forklift on a dime… and make change. He’s been with Heart to Heart International for more than 10 years. Glenn earned a degree in Industrial Technology from Pittsburg State University, and when he’s not at the GDC he enjoys grilling and playing with his grandchildren.
Receiving Coordinator – Operations Hub
In May of 2017, Jess graduated summa cum laude from William Jewell College with a degree in biochemistry. One week later, she joined HHI. While her long-term career aspirations lie in the medical field, Jess is thrilled to contribute to the betterment of global health through her work as a Logistics Coordinator. In this role, her responsibilities range from the logistics of people (management of two African HIV surveys) to the logistics of product (shipment of donated medical supplies all over the world). When she’s not at work, Jess enjoys culinary experimentation, training for her first marathon, reading in her hammock, playing tennis, and having good conversations with great people.
Creative Arts Associate
Steven is a self-taught graphic designer and photographer, having caught the bug at a very early age. Armed now with a bachelor’s degree in graphic design and unbridled energy, he designs both print material and digital imagery for HHI. Steven hails from Warrensburg, MO, but recently moved to the big city. In his free time, he likes to venture through the woods, camera in hand.
PHIL VAN GOETHEN
Phil (VG) started in 2013 working as a volunteer for 4 years, then worked as a contractor, part-time employee and now a full-time Warehouse Coordinator. He is originally from Northern Wisconsin and has lived in the Kansas City area for 33 years. He and his wife Debbie have been married for 43 years and have 4 children and 3 grandchildren. He is retired from a 31-year career in sales and marketing, is an avid KU basketball fan, enjoys music, and feeding the birds.
Full-Time Staff Volunteer
Eddie is an authentic Ragin’ Cajun from Louisiana and a U.S. Air Force veteran. Eddie volunteers full-time on staff, primarily helping to coordinate volunteer trips to Haiti, and is always willing to help out wherever work needs to be done. She’s also a skilled paper crafter, who’s built quite the following on Pinterest.
Staff Volunteer – Operations Hub
Phil is quick with a joke and a laugh. He’s volunteered with HHI for a handful of years, working at the GDC, now at The Hub, and driving the Mobile Medical Unit into disaster zones. Phil is a lifelong Kansas City resident, is retired from a career at Hallmark in IT, and he’s been married to Julia for 40 years. He’s also a furniture and cabinet maker, an avid photographer, a “good weather” bike rider and enjoys the theater.
