Sierra Nevadas 2Halfway? What? Just about.
June 22, 2015

I’ve hiked most of the way through the Sierra Nevadas and am now heading into Northern California.  Almost 1100 miles in, and as this is posted I’m in South Lake Tahoe!  I’ve nearly been taken out by a casino buffet.  This should be about my halfway point as far as the time schedule goes, with more than half of the PCT miles ahead of me.

Sierra Nevadas 7With my trail legs fully under me and the terrain getting easier I should be able to do many 30+ mile days in the future.  As much as I’m going to miss being above tree line, of course, I have to keep pushing forward.

With both Mt. Whitney (highest point in lower 48 at 14,505ft)  and Forester Pass (highest point on the PCT at 13,200ft) completed in one day we decided to rest the legs for a day in Bishop at the hiker hostel.  It was one of those days that I don’t think I’ll ever forget.

Forester PassWhen we came down from getting snowed on up Forester Pass the sun was setting and the clouds broke.  We arrived at our campsite that was a little plateau between the pass and the bottom of the valley below.  There were clouds below us and I knew that the view was easily the most beautiful landscape I’d ever seen.  The pictures do it no justice.

What a view

It’s weird being in town now after being surrounded by nonstop good vibes of hikers on the trail.  This trip is also teaching me that living out of a backpack is a great way to have a trip and not a vacation.  Time to crush 125 miles to Mammoth Lakes!

toward Sierras

It’s a long way to the top if you wanna rock and roll!

And we’re done with 700 miles of desert and 2 days away from the highest summit in the continental U.S.

Cool pool

Once I got to Kennedy Meadows – mile 702 – and where the desert ends, I finally felt some sense of accomplishment.  When each hiker walks into the gathering everyone claps and yells.

We took off, heading into the Sierras as the song Kung Fu Fighting was playing.

500 miles

500 Miles!
May 21, 2015

Nathaniel Farmer:  Today we passed mile 500 and tomorrow we attempt our first 30+ mile day.  We walk the LA aqueduct so it shouldn’t be all that bad right?

I ditched my shoes almost 90 miles ago and have been hiking in sandals.  It’s the price I pay for not ordering my shoes soon enough.  I’ll switch back into shoes for the Sierra Nevada mountains.

rough feet

Since Wrightwood our daily mileage has been: 16 (late start/snow), 28, 26, 24 and 25.  We’ve gone through a KOA campground, Agua Dulce, Casa de Luna and are now at Hiker Town. A nice and semi-creepy place.

Casa de Luna was one of the coolest stops on the trip thus far thanks so much to the Andersons for taking care of so many hikers!

Desert, Mountains, Desert, Mountains
May 9, 2015

Nathaniel Farmer:   Since Idyllwild we’ve hiked through miles of 60 mph winds and arrived at Big Bear just before the snow.  So much for the nice Southern California weather you always hear about.  I have enjoyed the changes in the weather though.

San Jacinto 7We summited San Jacinto and hiked around our first patches of snow.  Then dropped back to the desert floor and then back into the mountains before arriving at Big Bear.  I’m starting to catch on to the fact that most of the time when hiking the PCT you’re either going up or downhill.  We hiked 26 miles yesterday to beat the snow.  That makes the most I’ve hiked in a single day so far.

We rested today and I’ve been fighting the battle of getting enough calories in my system.  With our packs full of food tomorrow morning my friend Victor and I take off for a hundred mile stretch to Wrightwood!
