The Experience in Photos

A month and a half ago Heart to Heart celebrated its 20th Anniversary in awesome fashion with “The Experience”.
Two days later we mobilized to respond to Hurricane Sandy, and as always the case around here, we’ve been very busy with that and everything else that goes on at HHI.
The point? The photos from that wonderful night in late October haven’t been released.  Until now…

We’ve uploaded the best photos – 118 pics! – from The Experience onto HHI’s Flickr page.  Meaning you can view the photos in a slideshow (best viewed with high-speed connection), or scan through them individually.  You can also download the photos that you like in varying sizes.

For those who attended the night, this will take you back and refresh your memories.  For those who couldn’t make it, these photos will give you a glimpse of the evening… a night of Experience, Engagement & Entertainment. And great food!

A Care Kit Christmas Story

Many companies and organizations hold Christmas and holiday parties this time of year. It’s a fun time to enjoy the season with co-workers. Here’s one example of a company doing that and quite a bit more. They turned their annual party into a Care Kit assembly party! You can too!   Find instructions for building Care Kits here. Many thanks to Docs Who Care and to Karen Garrett for the story.

Karen: The office personnel of Docs Who Care met for their annual Christmas party recently.  Wonderful food, games and laughter were in great supply as always!  DocsWhoCareParty7What was different this year was the opportunity to give back in a very tangible way.  We wanted to share our hearts with those in need by donating and assembling Care Kits for Heart to Heart International.  Throughout November, staff shopped, collected and donated enough items to complete 100 care kits.  It was quite a display to see toothbrushes, toothpaste, combs, bars of soap, band aids, shampoo, towels and wash cloths spread out on a large table.  An assembly line was formed and the real teamwork began!

DocsWhoCareParty6 We definitely laughed, joked and had a lot of fun putting everything together, but we were also very touched to play even the smallest part of helping someone in need during a time in crisis. A total of 100 care kits were completed to bring hope to someone in need.
And imagine our delight as we saw those care kits heading to the Heart to Heart Global Distribution Center the very same day!
No doubt, we were all left with a much greater appreciation for the significant role Heart to Heart plays in responding to crisis situations here in the U.S. and worldwide.

The Emcee with Experience…

We’re just days away from The Heart to Heart Experience!! We are very excited about this very different event… and just a little bit busy behind the scenes getting ready.

Certain to make the evening great, is our emcee.  The one and only Kris Ketz.

Kris Ketz is a veteran new anchor for Kansas City’s KMBC-9 News, seen weekday mornings on KMBC’s First News.  An Emmy award-winning broadcaster, he’s just recently been inducted into the Silver Circle of the Mid-America chapter of The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS) in honor of his 35 years of service to the industry.

Ketz: “I think Heart to Heart is a big part of what makes Kansas City great, it’s neighbor helping neighbor whether around the corner or half way around the world.”

It’s really shaping up to be a great night.  We hope you can join us.

Family Volunteer Day

We’re rather fortunate at Heart to Heart that so many volunteers come out to help us at our Global Distribution Center.  Many times it’s school groups, Scouts, civic groups, religious institutions and of course individuals.  How about the families?

Today we kicked off something new for Summer — Family Volunteer Day! This will be a monthly event, held in the morning of the third Thursday of the month at our distribution center, during the Summer while the kids are out of school.

For this first Family Volunteer Day, two families came out to lend a hand. First they took a tour of the GDC to learn about our operations and to get an idea of just how much medicine and medical aid Heart to Heart handles and distributes through our global network.

From there, they got to work in our Care Kit assembly area.  Today, we needed individual items sorted; bandages counted out to 10 and sealed in a baggie and toothpaste taken out of the box.  Those toothpaste boxes then go into the recycling bin.

While they worked, we learned some of what brought these folk out to volunteer.  Alisha came with her son Ashton, a 6th grader.  She is a Family Medicine Resident and was looking for a way to put in some service hours. She said the Family Volunteer Day “is a nice introduction to what you do.”

Across the table sat Amy, along with her two sons George, 9, and Johnny, 7.  She also brought along a neighbor’s daughter, 12 year old Elisabeth.  Amy says they had planned to come volunteer with a school group earlier in the year but the scheduling didn’t work out.  So here they were!

George explained that he’s working on earning more community service hours, that are tabulated at his Blue Valley District school.  He’s up to 10 hours already and hopes to earn more than a bronze medal this school year. His thoughts on volunteering at the GDC: “It’s cool. I like all the flags.”

Play Bingo, Support Lab Techs in Haiti

Time to get your Bingo On!

Wednesday June 20th, 2012, the Kansas City Clinical Laboratory Management Association (KC CLMA) is heading out to to the festive and colorful Hamburger Mary’s in the Kansas City Crossroads Arts District to play a little bingo, eat some great food and have a blast raising funds to support their scholarship programs.

The KC CLMA scholarships support volunteers who provide lab services in our Partner Clinics in Haiti.

Great cause, great company, great food… great fun!

Ah! The Days of Wine & Rotary…

There’s an event quickly approaching that will greatly benefit Heart to Heart International… and it comes with wine and gourmet food tasting!  Hard to beat that!

The Olathe, KS Rotary Club is hosting the third annual The Days of Wine & Rotary at 6pm this Saturday evening, May 5th at the Ritz Charles in Overland Park, KS. Tickets can be purchased by following the link.

Heart to Heart was born out of the enormous efforts of Rotarians 20 years ago this month as they mounted the “Heart to Heart Airlift” to Moscow following the fall of the Soviet Union.  And we’re honored to have their continued support.

So come out, support the Olathe Rotary Club & Heart to Heart International… and enjoy a fine evening of Wine & Rotary (and food!).
