At Heart to Heart International, we know that disaster preparedness is key to saving lives, which is why we’ve partnered with the J&J Foundation to support frontline healthcare workers. Together, we’re distributing Healthcare Worker Emergency Kits to clinics in disaster-prone communities, ensuring that the people who care for us have the essential supplies they need to continue their life-saving work during a crisis.
This same principles of preparation and ensuring essential supplies are on hand before they are needed apply to every family. While we equip the healthcare workers in the clinics, we encourage you to equip the family members in your home.
Creating a home emergency kit is a simple, proactive step that empowers you to care for your loved ones during the critical first 72 hours after a disaster, when access to outside help may be limited.
Here are the foundations for your family’s emergency kit:
- Water (The #1 Priority): Store at least one gallon per person, per day, for a minimum of three days. Don’t forget water for pets!
- Food (Non-Perishable): Pack a three-day supply of non-perishable food that requires no cooking or refrigeration, like protein bars, canned goods (with a manual can opener!), and dried fruit.
- First Aid Kit & Medications: A comprehensive first aid kit is essential. Crucially, include a 7-day supply of all necessary prescription medications, eyeglasses, and any other medical supplies your family relies on.
- Lighting and Communication: Pack flashlights, a battery-powered or hand-crank radio, and plenty of extra batteries. Cell phones are great, but power can be lost, so include a portable charger or power bank.
- Important Documents & Cash: Keep copies of vital records (insurance, IDs, medical history) and some extra cash in a waterproof, portable container.
Building a kit is a family project. Store it in a sturdy, easy-to-access container and review the contents every six months. By preparing at home, you help our community stay resilient, allowing organizations like Heart to Heart International to focus on reaching the most severely affected areas.
