Beyond the Match: How Local Leaders Are Strengthening Healthcare in Ghana

Healthcare Work in Ghana

This week, Ghana takes center stage at the World Cup in their debut game against Panama, At Heart to Heart International, the match offers a moment to reflect on our own connections to Ghana, where incredible teams of community members, corporate partners, and medical professionals are working together to expand access to healthcare.

To date, HHI has coordinated the delivery of $17 million in essential medications and medical supplies to supporting organizations across the country. But long-term health resilience requires more than reliable supply lines; it requires investments local clinical infrastructure. That is why we are also working with the community on sustainable health solutions, including laboratory diagnostics and specialized eye care.

Turning a Vision into a High-Tech Diagnostic Hub

Over the past four years, Heart to Heart International has been working alongside community leaders and partnering with BD and Millennium Promise to help bring two laboratories to rural Ghana. The lab in Dunkura is now a thriving diagnostic hub serving more than 30,000 people. Equipped with the region’s very first ultrasound machine, this project has brought vital diagnostic testing to a community that previously lacked access to it. The establishment of the laboratory forms part of a broader strategy aimed at enhancing diagnostic services, reducing delays in treatment, and ultimately improving patient care.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony for the lab in Dunkura, the Bosome Freho District Director of Health, Mrs. Francisca Essinam Ahiavi , expressed profound gratitude for what she described as a transformative intervention. She noted that the new facility would significantly strengthen the district’s diagnostic capacity and reduce referrals to distant health centers. The Chief of Boagyaa, Nana Appiagyei Danka, commended the organizations for their timely intervention and encouraged residents to make good use of the facility.

Expanding Access to Specialized Eye Care

Beyond laboratory diagnostics, HHI is partnering with The Yonkofa Project to advance ophthalmic care across the region.

Recently, HHI recently shipped a specialized slit lamp to Half Assini District Hospital. This single piece of equipment allows the local government to deploy an “eye nurse” to prescreen surgical patients. To ensure long-term clinical success, Dr. Lordson Dagba, a Specialist Ophthalmologist from Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, has been leading hands-on training for healthcare providers. When patients require advanced intervention, a specialized Mobile Eye Surgery truck now travels between districts, moving the surgical team and all necessary supplies directly to remote villages.

Cheering for Ghana

So, as you watch the match this week, join us in honoring the local leaders, healthcare workers, and families in Ghana who are working tirelessly off the pitch to build a healthier, more resilient future.
