Responding to Historic Hawaii Flooding

Hawaii has been battered by a series of intense storm systems in recent weeks, leading to widespread flooding, power outages, and damage. In late March, Hawaii experienced its worst flooding in over 20 years when heavy rainfall, exacerbated by back-to-back Kona-Low weather systems, dropped up to 50 inches of rain over a 10-day period. An estimated two trillion gallons of water soaked the state and brought catastrophic flooding.

Another Kona-Low storm system dropped heavy rain across the islands beginning last week and continuing through the weekend. With the ground already saturated from last week’s storm, the risk of flash flooding in Hawaii is high. This latest storm exacerbated the damage and is delaying recovery, with many areas still needing debris removal, stream clearing and infrastructure repairs from the March rain.

Our Response to Flooding in Hawaii

Our Disaster Response Team has been monitoring this situation and reaching out to partners in the region since the initial Hawaii flooding in late March. We have sent two shipments of 3,000 hygiene kits each to Project Vision Hawai’i, a nonprofit with a mission to increase access to health and human services for the people of Hawai‘I, with a focus on under-resourced communities, including the unhoused. One of the shipments of kit we sent in March went to Maui and the other went to Oahu.

We worked extensively with Project Vision Hawai’i during the Maui Wildfires in 2023, when fires destroyed large We responded with aid, including hygiene kits, medicines, and medical supplies, as well as portable container medical clinic.areas of Lahaina and killed more than 100 people.  This existing relationship will ensure the critical hygiene items get into the hands of those who need them most quickly and effectively.

We continue to monitor the ongoing healthcare needs as the floods in Hawaii continues and are prepared to send more aid if requested.
