Typhoon Bavi Response: Supporting Communities in the Northern Mariana Islands

Typhoon Bavi

Just a few months after facing Super Typhoon Sinlaku, the residents of Rota, Saipan, Tinian, and Guam are facing the aftermath of another massive storm. Typhoon Bavi struck as a Category 5  storm, leaving thousands without power and cutting off vital road access. This forced many families who had only recently returned home back into emergency shelters.

The most severe damage occurred on Rota, where the eye and eyewall passed directly over the island on July 6. A giant storm, Bavi’s hurricane-force winds extended well beyond the eye. This meant that even islands outside the direct landfall zone experienced prolonged periods of destructive winds, torrential rain, and hazardous seas.

The damage to homes, infrastructure, and utilities across Rota, Saipan, Tinian, and Guam is extensive. When a community is hit by consecutive disasters, immediate health and hygiene resources become critical.

To support our local partners on the front lines of the recovery, HHI is preparing two immediate shipments:

  • 2,400 Hygiene Kits to Be Heartfelt
  • 2,400 Hygiene Kits to the Commonwealth Community Health Corporation (CHCC)

Both of these organizations received shipments of hygiene kits in response to Super Typhoon Sinlaku earlier this year, so are well trusted to deliver these supplies directly into the hands of those in need.

Thanks to the dedication of our volunteers, supporters, and partners these 4,800 kits will deliver essential personal care items directly to those who need them most.
