Supporting Kankakee County, Illinois, in the Wake of Severe Weather

Severe Weather in Illinois

The arrival of spring marks the official start of severe weather season. Across the Midwest, this is a time of heightened awareness as warmer air masses collide, making tornadoes a more frequent and unpredictable threat to our communities.

On the evening of March 10, 2026, that threat became a reality. At approximately 6:20 p.m. CDT, a powerful EF-3 tornado tore through Kankakee County, Illinois. With peak winds reaching 150 mph, the storm carved a 36-mile path of destruction, beginning near Aroma Park and crossing state lines into Indiana.

The storm did cause quite a bit of destruction as it made its way across the community, including:

  • Structural Damage: Significant damage to residential homes and commercial buildings.
  • Infrastructure Failure: Downed power lines and electrical grids.
  • Obstructed Roadways: Debris-filled streets obstructing movement and emergency access.

Nine individuals in the county sustained injuries, and sadly, the same storm system claimed two lives after moving into Indiana.

Heart to Heart International’s Response

Whenever these storms strike, our Disaster Response Team immediately reaches out to our network of local partners to determine exactly what their communities need to begin the long process of recovery.

We are currently organizing the delivery of 600 hygiene kits to the Hippocrates Medical Clinic in Kankakee, Illinois. These kits provide essential supplies to individuals who may have lost access to their homes or basic utilities, ensuring they have the resources needed to maintain health and personal care during this crisis.
